The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2020 County Business Patterns (CBP) statistics on Thursday, April 28th. CBP covers more than 8 million U.S. business establishments, and provides employment and payroll data at subnational levels by industry.

Statistics are available at the U.S., state, county, metropolitan/micropolitan statistical area, combined statistical area, and congressional district levels for nearly 1,000 industries defined by the North American Industry Classification System. Data for Puerto Rico and the Island Areas are available at the state and county-equivalent levels.

CBP data are obtained from Census Bureau reports and administrative records from other federal agencies. CBP defines employment as all full- and part-time employees who were on the payroll during the pay period that includes March 12.

Statistics are presented in comma separated value (CSV) files for download and manipulation on the CBP website. CBP data can also be accessed using multiple tools available via the Census Bureau website, including QuickFactsCensus Business BuilderMy Congressional DistrictMy Community Explorer, and data.census.gov.

The 2020 CBP data release is accompanied by an infographic with the average annual payroll per employee by sector. Our tip sheet is located here.
